Clatsop County is seeking input from the community about housing options on rural lands.
The Community Development Department is hosting an online survey to gauge community opinions about Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and their place in the unincorporated county.
ADUs are second, complete living spaces on a property which already has a main dwelling; ADUs are a way for property owners to more fully utilize their property by providing a separate living area for visitors or family members, or for use as a long-term rental unit. ADUs can be either attached to the main house or separate from it.
Currently, ADUs are allowed only in specific areas of unincorporated Clatsop County that are connected to a community sewer system. In 2021 the Oregon Legislature passed Senate Bill 391, which allows counties to adopt new regulations to permit ADUs on rural lands that have septic systems.
The state law requires that eligible parcels be at least 2 acres in size, and prohibits ADUs to be used as short-term rentals.
Because SB 391 gives counties the option of whether to allow ADUs, the county is inviting residents and property owners to share whether they support these dwelling types, as well any concerns they may have.
The survey will be live through June 24. Paper copies will also be available at the Community Development office, 800 Exchange St., Suite 100, Astoria.
